At Lyft Counselling, we work with athletes who want to strengthen the mental side of performance. Training your body is only part of sport. Confidence, pressure, focus, and how athletes respond to mistakes can all impact how they perform when it matters most.

Our approach supports athletes who want to compete, grow, and perform at their potential, while also developing the mental resilience needed to sustain a healthy relationship with sport.

We offer three ways athletes can receive support: performance workshops, athlete group therapy, and individual therapy.

FOR ATHLETEs

  • Mental skills training for teams and organizations

Athlete performance workshops help teams build the mental skills that support confidence, focus, and resilience in competition. These sessions are designed for teams who want to proactively support their athletes' mental performance and wellbeing.

Workshops may focus on topics such as:

    • Managing competition nerves and pressure

    • Developing confidence and mental resilience

    • Improving focus and preparation before competition

    • Responding effectively to mistakes during performance

    • Navigating expectations from coaches, parents, and teammates

    • Maintaining motivation through training and setbacks

Workshops are interactive, practical, and tailored to the team’s age, level, and sport. Athletes leave with strategies they can apply immediately in training and competition.

Workshops can be delivered virtually or in person, and in some cases we attend team practices to integrate mental performance skills directly into the training environment.

  • Support and skill development alongside other athletes

Competitive sport can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be isolating. Many athletes struggle with pressure, self-criticism, or fear of making mistakes while believing they are the only one experiencing it.

Athlete group therapy provides a structured space where athletes can develop mental skills while connecting with others who understand the demands of competitive sport.

Groups may explore challenges such as:

    • Performance anxiety and competition nerves

    • Fear of mistakes or letting others down

    • Confidence and self-criticism

    • Injury and return-to-play stress

    • Burnout and pressure in high-level sport

    • Balancing sport, school, and life

The group setting allows athletes to learn new tools, build perspective, and recognize that these challenges are common in sport. Groups are facilitated by a therapist to ensure a supportive and productive environment.

  • Personalized support for performance and mental wellbeing

Individual therapy offers athletes dedicated one-on-one support focused on their unique challenges, goals, and experiences in sport.

Athletes often seek individual therapy when they are experiencing:

    • Performance anxiety or overthinking in competition

    • Loss of confidence or fear of mistakes

    • Pressure from expectations or perfectionism

    • Difficulty returning after injury

    • Burnout or loss of enjoyment in sport

    • Struggles balancing identity within and outside of athletics

Sessions help athletes better understand how their thoughts, emotions, and experiences influence their performance. Together we work on developing practical strategies that support both competitive performance and long-term wellbeing in sport.

The goal is not only to help athletes perform better, but also to help them build a healthier and more resilient relationship with their sport.

Community Project

THE ANXIETY MONSTER

We are teaming up with local athletes to bring the Anxiety Monster to life, creating media stories that help normalize anxiety in sport. These projects connect with youth who might feel alone in their experiences, showing them that anxiety is something they can understand, manage, and face without fear. Using local athletes makes the stories relatable, authentic, and full of energy, and we always have a blast filming them.

Through projects like this, Lift helps athletes, coaches, and youth see anxiety not as something to hide from but as a part of performance that can be acknowledged, explored, and handled with confidence.
